Grimsby was once one of the busiest fishing ports in the world, and the Fishing Heritage Centre on Alexandra Dock does a proper job of telling that story. It’s three miles from Cleethorpes and well worth the drive, especially when the weather turns.
The centrepiece is the Ross Tiger, a genuine side-winder trawler that you can board and explore. The experience is atmospheric and well put together — you walk through a reconstructed 1950s dockside, meet life-size characters from the fishing community, and get a real sense of how brutal and essential that industry was.
It’s the kind of museum that works for adults as well as children, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Allow around two hours. The gift shop is small but good.
For families with primary-age children, this is one of the best options within easy driving distance when a day outdoors isn’t possible. For anyone with even a passing interest in social history, it’s unexpectedly absorbing. It regularly wins regional tourism awards, and it deserves them.
