Cleethorpes doesn’t sell itself. It doesn’t need to. Once you’ve walked the seafront early, eaten fish and chips somewhere that’s been doing it for decades, and found the smaller things that don’t make the brochures — you understand why people keep coming back.
Here’s how to spend a weekend properly.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Eat
Drop your bags and head straight to Sea View Street. Steels Corner House is the right call for your first evening — sit-down fish and chips, proper batter, no fuss. Book ahead on Fridays. It fills.
Saturday: The Beach and the Railway
The beach earns the attention it gets. At low tide it opens right out — go early before the car parks fill up. Once you’ve had a walk, the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway is worth an hour of your morning. It’s been running along the seafront since 1948, steam and diesel, volunteer-operated, about a mile each way. The kind of thing that only exists because people refused to let it stop.
The pier amusements are still there. Sea View Street has independent shops and cafés worth an afternoon. None of it is shiny and all of it is genuine.
Saturday Evening: The Nottingham House
Head to The Nottingham House on Alexandra Road. Real ales, live music at weekends, a crowd that’s mostly local. Get there before seven if you want a seat.
Sunday: Grimsby Heritage and the Drive Home
The Fishing Heritage Centre on Alexandra Dock is three miles from Cleethorpes and worth the drive. Board the Ross Tiger — a genuine converted side-winder trawler — and spend a couple of hours in what this town was built on. It regularly wins regional tourism awards and it earns them.
If time allows, Waltham Windmill is another twenty minutes out. Six sails, fully restored, a village that hasn’t been rearranged for visitors.
